Trial, But Mostly Error.

Do you remember, dearest blog-friends, my excitement? My promises of quilts-coming! Quilts Ahoy! And do you know, dearest blog friends, what it feels like when after getting 1/2 way through something, to discover that it is hideous? Like, it was looking a little sketchy up to this point, but then you see the whole thing and it suddenly comes into focus, and it is UGLY? It is disheartening, my friends. It makes you sit sadly at your computer screen, flipping through flickr, and wondering, how did this happen? How did it all go so terribly, terribly wrong?
Ack. And, having dedicated so much time and effort and fabric (!!) to the task, you know it must be, somehow, salvaged, and you look with dread at your seam ripper.
That is where we are my friends. I wouldn't wish this fate on any of you.

Drat ! We've all done that . But sometimes you have to try something new . I hope the unpicking isn't too painful and a solution presents itself as you work .

You wouldn't need to wish it on me anyway, Lauren. I do it to myself all the time. Sewing, glass work, decorating, food..... Disaster that is never foreseen, but with hindsight is so obvious! Hope you can retrieve something from all your effort though.

Dear aunt June! Don`t worry!! What happend to you, have happend to most quilters all over the world..... So, cut it into pieces, or throw it into the garbitch..... Order some new fabric from Fat Quarter Shop and go on again... I love that you tell us about your mistakes.... That is what friends are for.....

But are you SURE it's ugly? Maybe let it sleep for a few days or weeks, and come back to it... And if you still think so, maybe the re-making task won't seem as daunting then.

I say give it to charity. Sometimes it isn't worth the time to undo, so finish it and give it to someone in need.

oh.... I would say: been there, done that.....

Look at it as an experience, don't let it discourage you.

How about showing us your new project? Maybe we can make suggestions that would make it better. IT seems that my projects all go through an ugly stage too.

You know, when I start to think something looks horrible, I put it way for a little while and then look at it again. Most of the time it's never as bad as I thought. I just needed some distance.

But wishing you luck with the seam ripper :)

While struggling to make sense of a large, scrappy, Asian quilt I had already pieced, I realized why my head was bobbing when I looked at it. No visual place to rest! Despondent and daunted by the prospect of countless hours of seam-ripping, I decided to move on. I'll finish it, give it away, and be wiser on the next project.
About your quilt: you wouldn't recognize it as ugly if not for the many beautiful items you've made. Carry on, my dear.
