We Found One.

And, it is perfect. It seems like we spent FOREVER looking, but once we finally decided what we really wanted, it ended up being simple. And, we got lucky.
First of all, I got what I wanted, which is, olllllllllllllld. This house would have great great great great grandchildren, if it could reproduce. It was built in 1900, and it FEELS like it, which I just love. And husband got what he wanted, because, get this, NOTHING NEEDS TO BE FIXED. This is the lucky part- in the past three years, the previous homeowner replaced all of those awful things that make you want to vomit when you realize how much they cost. Roof, new, windows, new, HVAC, new, etc etc but floors, delightfully old, plaster charmingly(? Ha.) cracked. And I am sure that there will be problems, but right now we are in pre-move-in-dreamy-state, where everything is rosy and I spend hours on end looking at paint samples. (Followed Jenny's advice on the Sherwin-Williams paint swatchy thing.)
So. We don't close until the end of May, but barring major catastrophes, it is our new home. And so now I can get back to making some things, (New fabric! In the pipes! Pipes bursting!) when I am not packing. Ugh. packing....

our new/old home is beautiful and I hope that the many years of love give it the good kind of character.

beautiful! We settle today (if all goes to plan) on a teensy little houselet built in 1897 (for perspective, Australia, where it is, did not become a nation/ federation until 1901). It's been a 14-month wait (there were 'issues' with the vendor), but it is soooo worth it!

I adore old houses. So much more life than new-new ones.

It looks so good! I'm green with envy. Paint a wall "Rossie's Envy" for me (aka SW 6709).

As one of my favorite three year-olds says: "My love it!" Ah, I am a lover of old houses as well, full of stories and life they are, interesting flowers pop up in the spring, floorboards and stairs with a lovely creak, beautiful "bones," full of light in the morning and afternoon...enjoy making it your *home!*

I am so happy for you Lauren...it is beautiful. I'll take old with character any day over new and sterile! Hope that you both will be happy in your new home.

It's lovely! And old (same age as mine, but in much better condition!) is packed with character. And challenges.....

Looking forward to getting regular updates! Only one piece of advice: Whatever you do, DON'T do what we did, and take all your old stuff, saying "We can sort this out in the new house" because it will never happen. Be ruthless now!

old houses are so beautiful! i had to smile at (and post in response to) your comment about both you and your husband getting what you wanted. Our house hunt (and pick!) was the same story: I wanted an old house, and my husband finally agreed when we found one with updated kitchen, baths, roof, heating, etc. Have fun settling in!

Oh wow! What a perfect house....and the entryway is so bright and airy! I can see why you are so excited. Packing will stink of course but to be able to love in that beauty will be so worth it. And I love that pic with the paint deck....you will use it constantly I promise. Now we just need to figure out how to paint that entryway like you mentioned last night...... Congratulations!

Congratulations! I also love old houses. I had a 1920 arts and crafts bungalow for 10 years and that house was so cozy.

I hope everything closes and that the finalization goes smoothly for you. It's such a beautiful home!
